problems with iPad wifi tp range extender

I have a netgear wifi router and connected the netgear wn2000 range extender to push the wifi upstairs in my home. My iPad detects the extender and shows it on the list of available networks then prompts me to enter the password to connect. The iPad keypad pops up so i can type in the password but no letters will type in the password field. The keypad is working for all other functions such as email and google etc. Is anyone using this netgear range extender and if yes, how did you connect. Any problems entering the password? How far away from my Router can I get and still access the Internet? Does it matter which Router I have? Are there devices out there that increase the range that a portable unit can access my router? Since upgrading to IOS 4.2 my iPad would not stay connected to my network. Worked well on IOS 3.2.
