why wont my computer recognize my ipad mini

i just got my ipad mini and i plugged it into the wall and then tried to plug it into my computer to sync the music and some apps i have on my ipod but i cant even sync my ipad mini to my computer itunes thing. i dont want to have to buy all new music and i just want to be able to play games!! haha! ...|ipad-mini-plugged-wall-plug-computer-sync-music-apps-ipod

I got my mom's ipad and wanted to start with a fresh slate. Ok I just went and picked up my ipad from best buy which happened to be a open floor discount. It was 50.00 off so I figured why not. On my HP computer, we updated our itunes recently. Now when i try to plug my ipad version 6.0.1 won't connect to itunes.
